An Immigration lawyer is a specialist who handles immigration issues. We assist people and/or corporations in immigrating internationally. This may include obtaining a visa for workers of a company, visas for refugees and asylum-seekers, visas for students who want to study abroad, or even winners of a visa lottery.
Immigration lawyers also assist their clients during crises and other difficulties. For example, a student who is having trouble renewing his or her student visa might ask an immigration lawyer for assistance. People who have been brought up on immigration charges such as overstaying a visa or immigrating illegally may also use the services of an immigration lawyer to resolve their situations.
A typical day for an immigration lawyer is never the same. One day you may have client appointments all day, with issues ranging from people who overstayed their visas to a company that wants to transfer employees to the US.
Another day may be filled only with reviewing and completing application forms for individuals who have won the visa lottery, while another day could be filled up with answering client emails/communications and preparing clients for their interviews with USCIS or an Embassy officer.
In the end, the main job of an immigration attorney is to listen. To listen to the wants and needs of the client(s), and research & recommend all available options that fit those needs and desires. It is also the immigration attorneys’ duty to procure the proper forms and documents, and prepare/submit a application to the proper authority – whether it be the KCC, USCIS, Department of State or other government agency.
Finally, the best part of an immigration attorney’s day is when you have a client approved for the visa/immigration benefit that they were seeking. As immigration lawyer, you are in position to change and improve peoples’ lives every day. This may happen through getting an L-1 visa for a transferred employee, a visa for a student who really wants to study in the US, or could be a person who is lucky enough to win the lottery and is able to move his family from an impoverished country to build a new life in the US. Whichever way it happens, it is always the most rewarding part of being an immigration attorney.
